In his view, the American market represents an equally challenging-opportunity to improve his understanding of the industry. It’s a good chance to help other fellow architects gain an additional perspective, improve the interaction between retailers and architects as key players and thus, improve the effect built retail environment has on customers and their shopping habits.
He comes from Romania, an est-european country, where people are still going to school to learn how to do many thinks, instead of just one. His choice was Architecture and City Planning and has been working in the retail industry for several years, mostly as an architecture Tenant Coordinator with two of the largest European shopping center developers. This experience got him in contact with many commercial retailers (from large fashion to food chains) and shaped his idea of what keeps the industry rolling, what the SWOTs are and what architects can do to secure their clients’ satisfaction over an ever changing market.
Cristian had the chance to see things from the retailer’s perspective while designing and naturalizing the concept of two major shoe retails for the Romanian market, through a small architecture studio he helped establish 5 years ago.
He recently earn the LEED Green Associate certification and has been a member of USGBC – NY Chapter – since January 2012.

1. Which was your biggest professional achievement?
I think my biggest achievement is every time I develop a negotiation with clients without compromising the quality of service. I always commit to meeting deadlines in a manner that satisfies both my teammates and the client. As a result, I would say CIJ award for “Best New Shopping Center Development“ 2011 for MARITIMO Shopping Center, the latest development I was involved with; a true team effort.
2. Which was your biggest setback?
My biggest setback was that I did not always double-checked my information sources. I also need to mention that I have the tendency of being somewhat inflexible to some client requests when legal regulations were overlooked.
5. What job do you consider to suit you best?
I like jobs that require self motivation, an organized personality, have very clear responsibilities and are flexible in achieving goals. In my case, a must- have are at least two hours of private working per day.
6. Describe your IDEAL: career, company, department
I do not dream to an ideal career other than achieving self satisfaction over quality of undertaken projects. From a company perspective, I wish for a motivated team of professionals that understand that quality of service is equally a responsibility of the company and of their own. I would gladly work within any department as long as it has a flexible schedule and a results-orientated policy.
Favorite project: First Shopping and Entertainment Center of Cluj-Napoca
As a favorite project, he listed his diploma project, on the subject: „Consuming Architecture – a study of contemporary consumerism”. I was truly captivated by the pictures.
I`ve asked Cristi how does his future sounds. He replied:
I wan to enhance the experience I achieved working in the retail industry for the last years, to be able to develop a more efficient design & build process and getting more focused on energy efficient solutions. On the short term, I`m interested in becoming LEED certified AP .
I enjoyed learning more about Cristian. He has good morals business wise and always keeps in mind the client satisfaction. Something that we hear everyday, but not so often implemented. His desire to improve the world through green building is something that should make us think about our own actions towards the same direction.
